What Are Computer Viruses?...

A Computer virus is a computer program that can copy itself and infect a computer. The term "virus" is also commonly but erroneously used to refer to other types of malware, including but not limited to adware and spyware programs that do not have the reproductive ability.
A true virus can spread from one computer to another (in some form of executable code) when its host is taken to the target computer; for instance because a user sent it over a network or the Internet, or carried it on a removable medium such as a floppy disk, CD, DVD, or USB drive.
They may display political or insulting messages on you screen, deletes files on your hard drive, or wipe out your computer's operating system. Many are insidious, slowly altering selected files until on day--Boooomm!--- your system doesn't work. The variations are endless, but the end result is the same: disruption or destruction of your computer operations.


The name Virus is very appropriate. Computer viruses mimic the behavior of biological viruses in many ways. Just as a flu virus attach itself to a human host, computer viruses attach themselves to program or other files. Also like a flu virus, computer virus are contagious, and some use the resources of a host system to reproduce themselves.

Most viruses are disguised as public domain or shareware software, but a few have been passed around disguised as or embedded in legal or illegal copies of commercial software. Those that slip into your system disguised as a legitimate program are often called Trojan Horse Programs..
